More competition for cloud computing services

Key words: vendor, companies, market
With many of the major software vendors--and most recently, Microsoft--implementing Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) models, integrators and resellers are struggling to figure out how to make the switch and still make money. There are still a lot of unanswered questions, and the most recent monkey wrench in the works is the entrance of telecom carriers into the SaaS business.
Last week, AT&T announced that it would enter the market with a new SaaS service called Synaptic Hosting. AT&T will offer most common applications on demand, eventually expanding to include services like unified communication, dynamic backup, and other specialized services.
Earlier this summer, Verizon also announced an on-demand computing service. It's pretty easy to guess which companies are going to dominate in the SaaS world, of course, it's going to be the big telecom carriers. And because of the telecoms' size and reach, I would hazard a guess that they won't stop at targeting the enterprise; it's a natural sell to the SMB market as well. They may even go for the home user market, since they already have a significant footprint there as well.
AT&T will sell its services both through the channel and through its substantial direct sales force.
